Why lockdown helped me to get over FOMO

Spending lockdown doing what I want.

Picture this. It’s Friday night. It’s the second weekend that pubs are open (outdoors of course). & where am I? Sat on my sofa in my dressing down, writing this. PS. I never published this, but 2 years later I thought why not, and it’s a great reminder for me right now!

& do you know what? I’m buzzing about it. I have been exhausted from socialising this week, and it’s just what I needed.

18 months ago, I was always the first to say yes to a Friday beer. I don’t think I’ve ever declined one in my life. If everyone else had plans and it meant that I would be spending a Friday night in, I was miserable. I would spend my whole evening wondering why everyone else had friends and plans and I didn’t.

It’s not like I didn’t have friends or plans. I would literally be busy from the minute I woke up on Saturday to the minute I went to sleep on Sunday, but spending any time on my own on a weekend was just depressing.

Modern day FOMO

Social media is a dangerous narrative. I’ve just finished watching the Social Dilemma and it really drove this point home. We are addicted to social media. We’re constantly seeking the approval of others. We’re constantly comparing ourselves to the lives that others are living. We often feel like we need to modify our appearance, and highlight…
